San Bartolome or Ajei, situated in the centre of the island, was a refuge place for islanders in the face of pirate attacks. Nowadays, it displays in its museums the tools and crafts of the old inhabitants. Of special note is El Monumento del Campesino, work of Cesar Manrique, the international artist.
A little history
San Bartolome is situated in the central part of the island, which was known to the inhabitants as Ajei, which means 'small township'.
The settling of the population in this site was due to the retreat of the people from coastal areas during the time of pirate attacks as they searched for more secure places.
The most important festivals are: the municipality's festival, La Fiesta de San Bartolome, on 24th August, and the festivals of Playa Honda at the end of the summer in order to end the holidays.
The Christmas holidays are very important due to the folklore, and the representation of the nativity scene and the Christmas carols that have been adapted to Canarian music.
What to see
El Museo Etnografico Tanit was an old house from the C18 that was founded as a museum on 18th February 2000. The museum is made up of an exhibition gallery, market garden, old beam press, chapel, craft shop, café with terrace and dance floor.
La Casa de La Cultura Ajei is an old, grand house from the C18 where one can see all the tools and materials that were used by Canarian farmers. Visiting times are Monday to Friday from 5pm to 10pm.
The church of San Bartolome was founded in 1787 by D. Cayetano Guerra and built in 1789. Inside we can enjoy its architectural beauty, an altarpiece from C18 and carvings of San Andres.
El Monumento del Campesino, situated in Mozaga, is the most typical and faithful example of popular rural architecture. Highlights include the sculpture of the fertility that shows a peasant with his flock, which was built by Jesus Soto from a design by Cesar Manrique. The house contains a museum, bar, restaurant, shop, workshops and a craft museum, possessions and belongings used by islanders in the past.
