Ferry to Fuerteventura
Posted by: Alan Davies ()

I want to fly into Lanzarote, spend a week on the island and then catch the ferry to Fuerteventura and spend a week there before catching the ferry back to Lanzarote to fly home. This will be in July 2004. Has anyone done this? Should I take the hire car from Lanzarote or hire another car in Fuerteventura?

Any views on the ferry trip. Is it eary to get on board or will it be very crowded in July?

Also welcome any recommendations on car hire companies and whether you should hire a 4 wheel drive to see the island properly.

We did the crossing as foot passengers from Fuerteventura on a day return. Fred Olsen Express runs about 5 times daily and takes only 12 minutes & cost us 25 Euros each (return). Think it's another 30 or so Euros to take a car. Booked the day before and there was hardly anyone else on it (this was January though)

Just back from Lanza and did the ferry to Fuerteventura. Went on the Fred Olsen there for just over 14 Euro and the slower (25 mins, instead of about 12) one back for just over 11 Euro. Apparently the trick is NOT to book a return ticket as this restricts your return date/time.
As previous person said, ferry practically empty, but this was in Feb. Did seem to be quite a few vehicles on though, including delivery trucks, etc so if have a vehicle, maybe need to book.
We were told (by the rep) that if you hire a car on Lanza, you are NOT insured to drive it on Fuerte, so need to re-hire over there.
There were LOADS of hire companies around in Playa Blanca. Did not try any so cannot recommend I am afraid. Needless to say, Airtours were pushing Avis.
