A little research - Restaurant & Bar owners only please

Hi everyone,

We (Myself and my Fiancée Angela) have just had another break in Lanzarote and loved it as always.

While there I noticed that some bar owners were saying that Business was good, while others (a lot more others!) were saying that there was a definite downturn and things were pretty dire.

I just wanted to do a little research and ask the people "in the know" what their thoughts were as to why things had got so bad in these trades.

I have my own ideas but will keep them to myself for now as I'd like to see if what I have in mind is right.

Before anyone asks, I am not thinking of opening a Bar / Restaurant, although I am thinking of moving over to the Isle and really think I may be able to contribute something to help these industries in the future.

All your opinions / debate would be very helpful and I promise not to forget those who have helped me in the future.

I look forward to hearing your replies.

Dean & Angela

Not been here for ages but this topic was looking a little light on answers!

Where do you start!

Exchange rate - just google how many euros you got to the £ 4 years ago.
And linked to that holidays outside eurozone cheaper.
Irish economy collapsed last year
AI perceived as cheaper
Costa Teguise being bit of an AI zone
Global economy in general plus people in fear of losing jobs don't tend to book holidays
Too many bars - during the good times of 1995-2000 and 2002-2007 any muggins was opening a bar up

Hi,

All of the above.

For my 2 penny worth we tend to buy a bottle or two and sit on the balcony of a night. Because the prices are up or the pound/Euro down (which ever way you look at iot), we tend not to inhabit bars so much. Lunchtimes we again snack on the balcony instead of snacking out. It means we can enjoy a good meal out at night like normal albeit dearer.
Perhaps if we don't get dragged into the Euro over here, things may look up if the rate climbs once more.

Oz.
