Mosquitoes.... grrrowel!

Can anyone help?

I'm trying to get used to the mozzie situation here. I'm being bitten to death. The one on my eyelid this morning, is the final straw!!! Grrr!!!

We're burning citronella candles to ward them off... and I heard they don't like cigarette smoke either (not that I won't to smoke more than I already do), oh and I also heard that if you eat lots of garlic - they don't like the taste of your blood.

So if you see someone constantly slapping themselves whilst sat in a circle of yellow candles, sweating garlic out of every pore, with 5 ciggies on the go at once... that'll be ME then!

So what remedies have you found successful? Are these plugin things any good? If so, which brands can I get on the island that you would recommend?

Also, I spotted a creatur in my pool today that looks a bit like a tiny twig, with two long wings. It was darting about under the surface. needless to say, I killed it - I show no mercy! Anyone know what it might have been? Is it a water mozzie?

All help gratefully appreciated!

Hugs, Elle

My lanza mozzie survival guide.

People love going on hols with me as I seem to attract all the mossies away from everyone else! The bite I got on the erm gentlemans equipment was the worst!!

Basics:

1) Plugs - get them. Citronella candles are on massive waste of time. Use outdoors bye all means - but they do fug all. If you're renting surprised weren't in the villa. Get one for each room and insert new tablet each day.

2) Evenings, dusk is a particularly bad time. Cover up - trousers and apply jungle formula for anything that sticks out.

3) Lights. Turn off all lights in the house if you are outside - especially if you are have a barbie and leaving doors open.

4) Mossie nets - we have them on all the windows - check that there are no holes.

5) In the evenings couple of hours before bed - spray your room then put plug in then turn off lights and shut door.

6) Before going to bed scan the sealing for our biting friends. You can see them pretty easily. Latest copy of heat or ok will squash them nicely. Found vogue too heavy to swat properly.

Advanced tactics....

1. Having repeated the above for years and still getting bitten realised that our villa had a chimney and my theory was they were coming in there. With nothing else to hand sprayed sheets of newspaper with repellant and blocked chimney with it from the inside. Worked a treat!! Next day bought mossie netting climbed onto roof and stapled it all around the chimney. Was able to then unblock chimney as made it very stuffy in the house.

Still get a few but mainly becasue have been sitting outside pissed in the evenigs and forgot to put trousers and repellant on, or from letting them in through door.

Thanks everyone for all your help with this. I've not left the villa today as I look so horrific, but at least I can open my eye slightly tonight - so I can venture out tomorrow. I must be bad lol... I've even gone without vino tonight, as I couldn't face going out to buy some!!

I'm going to try most of these suggestions, I think. Something's got to help.

Seamermate, yes... I'm not far from the red mountain. I'm literally 2 mins walk from the Corbetta. There weren't many mozzies at first... but then the wet weather hit us a few days back - and that's when it kicked in. Still better than having to scrape your car on a frosty English morning though!

Thanks again everyone!

Should calm down a bit soon Coaty. Yes, the wind does help. I've not been bitten now for a few days - but then we've had some really high winds.

Our friends in Puerto Calero don't have a lot of problems. I think it's just me lol.

I don't mind smelling like a big tart... just a bit less of the "big"! ;-)

But I now know what I should've done to avoid the bites.

You should be okay, Suz.

They've all but disappeared from Playa Blanca now. I've not been bitten in a week or so (although Alan was eaten alive last night... but enough of our love life lol).

Buy a plug-in thingy for where you're staying... and a couple of sprays - and you should be fine.

No Angie... Alan came down to Rooftops, and escorted me as I zigzagged home! Yes, I was a classy chick, and fell over, grazing my eyebrow. Oh, and I tore of my left thumbnail. It's very sore today.

Yes, Suz. Do speak to Angie. Yes she's my pal... but we only got to know her because she helped us out when we arrived. Also speak to Guy Buske at www.a-zpaperwork.com he's another helpful person on the island.

Hugs, Elle

Lol Will. I don't remember a bad smell. I do remember the landlady was really lovely (although I can't remember her name). I remember Alan arriving to join us. But there are certainly blanks after that (which Alan has been enlightening me with... ahem).
Note to Elle: Lay off the voddie.

Hi Coaty. Hope you're enjoying your holiday! And no, I haven't been bitten in ages now! Hurrah!

Oh... you should've hung on. Alan's just about to pop down to PDC, and then to Puerto Calero. He could've given you and the missus a lift! Oh, and picked up the flowers and chocs too!

Note to Elle: Next time you're stood next to a fella who smells like an Avon lady... say "Hi Coaty!"
