LANZAID 2006 – PRESS RELEASE 04.04.06

LANZAID 2006 - IT’S NOT OVER TILL IT’S OVER ¡

• As a music concert and a spectacular night of entertainment here in Lanzarote it was absolutely fantastic. From the UK and Ireland - Johnny Logan, The Revs, Charlie Mack, Ashley Bruce and his band and rock ‘n rollers The Mearcatz made the huge effort to fit us into their busy schedules. SPECIAL THANKS TO YOU ALL..
• The local bands and acts were hugely professional and the Lanzaid team were enormously proud to show the rest of Europe (via the live web-cam coverage) just what a diverse range of talent we have here in Lanzarote - from the young local punk band SSRS through to the local SKA heroes the Skatoons. A huge thanks for supporting Lanzaid with your talent goes out to: Banda Axa, Molly Malones, The Mick James Duo, Geri B (Geri people have mailed us thanking us so much for having Dolly Parton up on stage !!), Mad Dog & the Englishman, Frank Sinatra/Tom Jones, Out of the Blue, Los Alrededores and their authentic Irish dancer, Pete Scott, Question with Wanda, Wicked Chickens & Charlie Mack, Elton John (AKA Iain Court) & Neil Diamond (AKA Jules Hall-Weakley), Tina Turner (AKA Rebecca O Conor), Africa Yeah, SSRS, The Music Hall Tavern and monster crowd pleasers The Skatoons
• In terms of raising money for charity we were far below our target. We raised 15,600 on the evening and are still hopeful that the continued sale of Lanzaid t-shirts and the Lanzaid Party to be held at Charlies Bar on 15th April will raise more money. A special mention must be made about the efforts of Jack Talbot, his team and the 100 children – most of whom were from Colegio Hispano Britanico – who raised over 7,000 euros with their 7km sponsored walk from Matagorda to the concert site in the old town. It’s definitely a case of the young ones leading the way !
• Asides from the bands the superstars of the night were all the volunteers, the sponsors and the authorities, without them the concert would be impossible. Please see the web-site (and immense thanks go to Clare at FCA for her web and design genius) for our full thank you list.
• From 14:00 – 02:30 Lanzaid provided fun and entertainment for all ages. We estimate that around 10,000 people came to the Old Town of Puerto del Carmen to watch Lanzaid ( at the peak time which was between 21:00 – 23:00 there were around 5,000 people in the concert zone )
• Through the web-cam coverage via Power FM radio’s web-site we know that at any one time there were up to 2,000 people from around Europe following the concert live on the world wide web and this doesn’t even include those who were just radio listeners !. Thanks must go to Mark Bennett and his production team, Power FM and Telefonica – friends and family around Europe got the chance to watch and listen to every fabulous band.
• The Alcalde of the Ayuntamiento of Tias – Sr Jose Juan Cruz Saavedra, and the President of the Cruz Roja Espanola in Lanzarote – Sr Arturo Ramirez Schwartz joined the Lanzaid Team on stage to confirm their support. With their continued support this will be an annual event for the island and this year we have been delighted with the additional backing from the Patronato de Turismo de Lanzarote. We cannot stress enough that we want this to be a charity concert for everyone – all nationalities, all ages, tourist and resident alike.

• There will be a Press Conference at the Cruz Roja Headquarters in Arrecife on Thursday 6th April for both the Spanish and International media with latest details.. Our thanks go to Cruz Roja for all their assistance on the night – it should be remembered that all the Cruz Roja staff who worked so hard at Lanzaid are also volunteers. Our charity partners from AFOL, L’Adaph, The Peru Water Project, Kikis Children in Nepal and the Senora de los Volcanes School in Tahiche will also be at the Press Conference.
• Thank you to all the people who have called, texted, dropped in or e-mailed to say what a fabulous time they had. Whilst advice about improvements will always be happily accepted, there is only one way to make it better VOLUNTEER, GET INVOLVED, SHOW US HOW TO MAKE IT BETTER. When all is said and done the Lanzaid team – Charlie, Sharon, Pete, Max, Chad, Alex, Mark & Tracey are a small gang of Scouts in a VERY large bushfire.
